Captain Morten and the Spider Queen Wins First Award

Captain Morten and The Spider Queen, the recently completed Estonian/Irish/Belgian /Welsh coproduction has picked up the Best Animated Feature award at the Schlingel festival for Children and young people in Chemnitz in Germany. It beat off competition from 124 films from 51 countries, including “The Breadwinner” and “White Fang”. Schlingel is the biggest festival of its kind in Germany. The prize was awarded by the German Institute for Animated Film, DIAF.

This is what they said about it:

A boy whose greatest wish is to be taken on a great sea voyage by his father and who dreams of being captain of his own ship. The best donuts in the world, a treasure holding a ship together, and out-of-control magic cannon to be used only by people who know what they are doing. These are just some of the ingredients for this boundlessly imaginative adventure with excellent animation and lovingly crafted characters. An enchanting and adorable story, told in an original and detailed way.

The film, made in stop motion animation, is in great demand at festivals and is beginning to find theatrical distribution, having recently been released in France. It is the first feature of Estonian director, Kaspar Jancis, who said “It’s great to pick up an award at a festival for children and young people. This is first and foremost a family film and is not just for animation fans.”

'Morten' Screened at IFI Family Festival 2018

Neil Delamere pictured at the ‘Captain Morten’ screening as part of Irish Film Institute Family Festival August 31st – September 2nd.

Young Morten’s life with his cruel aunt is not so happy and he dreams of joining his father at sea. One day, he is mysteriously transformed to the size of an insect, aboard a tiny boat in his aunt’s café. As the water rises, Morten and his insect crew struggle bravely to save the ship. Before returning to normal size, Morten has to grow up very quickly! Highly original, exciting and fun, this is a salty tale with a difference.

Captain Morten is Ireland’s first stop-motion feature animation, created by talented animators from the west of Ireland, Estonia, Wales and Belgium. Six years in the making, the film has an amazing array of characters and an all-Irish voice cast. Models used in the making of the film were on display during the festival.

Galway company Telegael expands its services to include Audio Description

Today marks the official launch of Audio Description (AD) services by Galway company TMI, which is part of the Telegael Group. AD is an extra sound track on a TV show or film. When it’s turned on, you will hear a narrator describing the images, landscape and characters currently on screen. It does not overlap with the dialogue of the original show. People who have a visual impairment or who are blind are the main consumers of AD.

In the past, people could only really access AD on the DVDs of very successful films. But now, with the advent of digital TV and online video streaming services, combined with a greater global commitment to accessibility, Audio Description has become much more widely available.

About the Company

TMI is part of the Telegael Group. In addition to subtitling, live translation subtitling and surtitling (captions for theatres), our expansion into audio description marks yet another service provided by TMI which increases accessibility to TV shows and movies, bringing them to an even wider audience.
